In recent years, Costa Rica has shown vulnerability in energy budget, due to its high dependence on hydroelectric generation and the risks it entails in the current context of climate change. This highlights the need to seek energy alternatives that diversify the electric matrix through alternative renewable sources. In this context, the present research is a pioneering study in Costa Rica, and Central America, evaluating the feasibility of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology as a resilience option for the country. The goal is to identify areas with potential for the implementation of OTEC, considering technical, environmental, socioeconomic, and legal criteria.
The OES is organised under the auspices of the International Energy Agency (IEA) but is functionally and legally autonomous. Views, findings and publications of the OES do not necessarily represent the views or policies of the IEA Secretariat or its individual member countries.
