Abstract: The outstanding properties of composite materials are well known in aerospace and industry. High specifi c strength and stiffness, corrosion resistance and excellent fatigue behaviour are basic reasons for the use of composite materials.
This paper gives a brief over view over composite structures, manufacturing techni-ques (especially lament winding) and design principles. The last part of the paper deals with the special properties of composites in the context of ocean energy applications.
