The definition of the detailed wave characteristics of a particular site for a wave energy converter is key to evaluating the likely performance of any device. Also the testing of prototype devices to provide validated evidence of their performance is fundamental to proving the concept and attracting further investment. The methods for undertaking such measurement should be representative of both the sea state and the device characteristics.
